Seeking software engineering and data analytics internships

Hi, I'm Tanner Mayfield

BYU Information Systems

Adaptive Software Engineer

I build AI-assisted, full-stack software, and I'm drawn to software that adapts to people, context, and goals. I combine product thinking, database design, and AI automation to turn ideas into working systems.

Featured Projects

Each project carries an honest status. Case studies separate what exists today from what is planned.

Everything, in the order I'd tell it. Showing 6 of 6.

  • AI · Full-stack · DataIn Development (to be confirmed)

    BravOS

An adaptive AI workspace that assembles itself around what you're trying to do.

    Problem
Getting through a day means hopping between separate apps for money, calendar, tasks, and school.
    Where it stands
MVP focus on three tools: Finance Tracker, Calendar / Daily Task Manager, and School Assignment Tracker.
    What I learned
Spec-driven development: turning a product goal into specs and testable plans before orchestrating AI agents.
    • Codex
    • Claude Code

  • Full-stack · DataIn Development (to be confirmed)

    Skill Projects

Connects career goals to skills, learning, projects, and evidence.

    Problem
Students learn disconnected concepts in classes and tutorials with no system tying them to the career they want.
    Where it stands
A full-stack app for tracking the path Career Goals → Skills → Learning → Projects → Evidence → Portfolio.

  • AI · Full-stackIn Development (to be confirmed)

    Adaptive Language Learning

AI-powered language learning built around personalization, not a copy of existing apps.

    Problem
Most language apps give every learner the same path regardless of weaknesses, goals, or accent.
    Where it stands
Features built and tested in JavaScript and HTML/CSS using AI agentic workflows (since Oct 2025).
    What I learned
Reviewing, debugging, and testing AI-generated code to improve functionality and user experience.

  • Full-stackPrototype (to be confirmed)

    Gospel Study App

Scripture study that keeps the reading at the center.

    Problem
Deep scripture study means constantly leaving the text for definitions, context, and notes.
    Where it stands
Focused on a reading-first experience. Planned: tap an unfamiliar or Latter-day Saint-specific word for a clear contextual definition.

  • AI · DataResearch

    Lecture App

Connecting the live lecture to what students learn afterward. Working names: LectConnect, Lexure.

    Problem
In lectures, students listen, follow slides, and take notes at once, and context gets lost.
    Where it stands
Concept and research stage. Not a built application.

  • Full-stackIn Development

    This Portfolio

A real project: Next.js, Tailwind, and an interface that adapts to the visitor.

    Problem
    A resume can't show how I think.
    Where it stands
A data-driven static site with a focus lens that reorders content.
    • Next.js
    • React
    • TypeScript
    • Tailwind CSS
    • Git/GitHub

Smaller academic work

  • Tip Calculator

JavaScript app: bill amount, tip %, tip and total, bill splitting, with input validation.

  • Playlist Analysis Tool

JavaScript over song data: total duration, average length, longest and shortest song.

  • Dating App Database Design

Relational design with users, profiles, messages, and matches: foreign keys, one-to-one relationships, ERD.

Skills, with evidence

No percentage bars. Each skill points to the project that uses it, or says plainly that it doesn't yet.

AI engineering

Designing AI features and building quickly with agentic tools.

Database

Modeling data so products can grow.

Full-stack

From idea to a working application.

Product

Deciding what to build and why.

  • User research & problem discoveryUsed in Skill Projects
  • PRDs & feature prioritizationUsed in BravOS
  • Project managementCoursework / learning. No project linked yet.

Infrastructure & analytics

Shipping it and understanding the data.

About Me

I'm an Information Systems student at BYU, focused on software engineering and AI. I like understanding both the user's problem and how to build the solution, so I think about the user, the data, the implementation, and the reason a feature should exist.

Coursework in product management, database design, programming, and IT infrastructure sits alongside the things I build myself, mostly with AI agents in a spec-driven workflow. I'm especially interested in software that adapts to users, context, goals, and tasks.

I also speak Spanish fluently, am studying Portuguese and ASL, and play piano, drums, and guitar.

  1. 01

    Understand the user

Interviews, problem validation, and PRDs decide what is worth building.

  2. 02

    Model the data

Relational design, ERDs, and SQL give the product a sound foundation.

  3. 03

    Build full-stack

JavaScript applications taken end to end, with AI-assisted workflows.

  4. 04

    Ship and run it

Git, deployment, and cloud fundamentals that keep it working.
